Adonis Cocktail Recipe | Elegant 3-Ingredient Sherry Classic

Adonis cocktail in a cut-crystal coupe glass, a deep reddish-amber drink with a thin straw, on a wooden table in a sunlit garden — Recipe no.142

The Adonis cocktail carries the name of the most beautiful youth in Greek myth, yet it was named, quite fittingly, for Adonis, the 1884 Broadway hit that became the first show to pass 500 performances.

Stirred from dry sherry, sweet vermouth and a single dash of orange bitters, it glows amber and unfolds from nutty, toasty dryness into soft herbal sweetness, with a clean citrus finish. Light, low in alcohol and quietly elegant, it’s the aperitif worth stirring up tonight.

The Story of Adonis

The Myth of Adonis

In Greek myth, Adonis is the mortal youth loved by Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. His story begins with his mother, Myrrha, a princess of the royal house of King Cinyras, whose family worshipped Aphrodite for generations.

In one telling, someone in the family boasted that Myrrha was more beautiful than Aphrodite herself. The furious goddess used her power over love and desire, often symbolized by her magic girdle, to make Myrrha fall in love with her own father.

With the help of her nurse, Myrrha came to her father in the dark on a festival night, and he did not know who she was. When Cinyras finally saw her face by lamplight, he tried to kill her, and she fled all the way to Arabia.

Taking pity on her, the gods turned Myrrha into a myrrh tree. That’s why the fragrant resin myrrh bears her name. In some versions, a boar later split the tree open, and from inside it the baby Adonis was born.

Adonis was as beautiful as his mother, and Aphrodite fell in love with the infant at once. She hid him in a chest and entrusted it to Persephone, queen of the underworld, warning her never to look inside. Persephone opened it anyway, and she too fell in love with the child and raised him.

When Aphrodite came back for the grown boy, Persephone refused to give him up. The gods settled it by dividing his year into thirds: one with Aphrodite, one with Persephone and one of his own choosing. Adonis chose to spend his own third with Aphrodite as well, which left Persephone resentful.

Adonis loved hunting above all else and ignored Aphrodite’s warnings about its dangers. In one version of the myth, Persephone told Ares, the god of war and Aphrodite’s lover, that the goddess now preferred a mortal youth. Enraged, Ares took the form of a wild boar and killed Adonis during a hunt.

From the blood Adonis shed, a red anemone bloomed. This is why the anemone, with its short-lived beauty, has long been linked to his name.

The Birth of the Adonis Cocktail

The Adonis cocktail was created in New York in the 1880s to celebrate Adonis, a Broadway musical that opened in 1884. The show was a huge hit and became the first production in Broadway history to run for more than 500 performances, so naming a drink after it was a natural tribute.

The recipe was later preserved in the famous Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, which is why the drink is so often linked with the Waldorf-Astoria’s legendary bar. Light and elegant, it outlived the show itself and became a lasting classic.

Flavor and Recommendations

Flavor and Character

The Adonis shines through the refined balance of two characterful fortified wines. Dry sherry brings nutty, dry notes, while sweet vermouth adds herbal and spiced complexity, gentle sweetness and body. A single dash of orange bitters lifts the citrus aroma and ties everything together.

In the glass, it glows amber, like captured evening light. The first sip opens with sherry’s toasty dryness, followed by vermouth’s sweetness and herbal layers, and the faint bitterness of the orange keeps the finish clean and lingering.

With its relatively low alcohol, it slips down smoothly and elegantly. I always recommend it as an aperitif, because it wakes up the appetite without overwhelming the palate.

Swap the sweet vermouth for dry vermouth and you have the Bamboo, a cocktail created in Yokohama and celebrated as one of the first cocktails born in Japan.

Points, Twists & Food Pairings

Tips for Making It

1. Use fresh sherry and vermouth (a common mistake)
Many people use a bottle of sherry or vermouth that has sat open at room temperature for months. Both are wines, so they oxidize and taste flat and stale. Keep opened bottles in the fridge and finish dry sherry within a week or two and vermouth within about a month.

2. Stir briefly to protect the flavor
With its low alcohol, the Adonis dilutes faster than spirit-forward drinks. About 15 seconds of smooth stirring is enough to chill it while keeping the sherry’s nutty aroma and the vermouth’s body intact.

3. Choose your sherry style with intent
“Dry sherry” usually means fino or amontillado. I’d use fino for its crisp, saline freshness, which keeps the drink light and bright. Amontillado gives a nuttier, rounder result for cooler evenings.

Twists

1. Bamboo
Swap the sweet vermouth for dry vermouth to make the Bamboo, a classic born in Yokohama. It turns drier, crisper and more delicate, a lovely way to taste how one ingredient changes the whole drink.

2. Adonis Spritz
Build the Adonis over ice in a wine glass and top it with chilled soda water. The bubbles lift the sherry’s aroma and lower the strength further, making a refreshing low-ABV drink for daytime or warm evenings.

3. Orange Peel Finish
Twist a strip of orange peel over the glass and drop it in. The fresh citrus oils echo the orange bitters, adding a bright aroma that makes the first sip even more lively.

Food Pairings

1. Salted almonds
Marcona or roasted almonds are a classic sherry snack. Their toasty, nutty notes mirror the sherry, and the salt sharpens the vermouth’s gentle sweetness for a perfectly balanced aperitif.

2. Jamón or prosciutto
Cured ham’s rich fat and saltiness meet the drink’s dry sherry and soft vermouth sweetness, much like ham with melon. Each sip refreshes the palate for the next slice.

3. Green olives and Manchego
Spanish tapas suit sherry’s homeland flavors. The olives’ briny tang brightens the drink, while Manchego’s nutty, savory depth echoes the sherry and smooths the bitters’ edge.
