The Artist’s Special cocktail is, true to its name, a drink born among bohemian painters and poets, first printed in 1927 as the house recipe of the Artists’ Club on Rue Pigalle, Paris. Whisky lays a warm, oaky canvas, dry sherry brushes in nutty, savory depth, and lemon with grenadine adds bright acidity and a rosy glow, shaken hard into a silky, sweet-tart sour.
Shake one tonight and toast the Jazz Age of Paris, one inspired sip at a time.

Origin

The Artist’s Special first appeared in print in Harry MacElhone’s 1927 book Barflies and Cocktails, credited to the Artists’ Club on Rue Pigalle in Paris. Three years later, The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930) repeated the recipe, calling it the genuine “Ink of Inspiration” enjoyed at the Bal Bullier, a famous Paris dance hall.
In the 1920s, the Pigalle area buzzed with jazz and artists, so a drink named for them fit perfectly. At heart, it’s a Whiskey Sour enriched with sherry.
The original recipe used groseille, a red currant syrup, which gave the drink a vivid pink hue. Grenadine makes an easy, widely available substitute today.
Features & Taste

The Artist’s Special balances fruitiness, woody depth and crisp acidity. Whisky’s rich aroma meets dry sherry’s nutty, savory edge, while lemon and grenadine bridge them into a smooth, sweet-tart whole.
Its rosy color looks like a small work of art in the glass, and it makes a lovely aperitif with light appetizers. I always shake it hard and fine-strain it, because a well-chilled, silky texture lets the sherry’s subtle notes shine.
Points, Twists & Food Pairings

Tips for Making It
- Keep your sherry fresh. A common mistake is using a bottle of dry sherry that’s been open on the shelf for weeks. Light styles like fino oxidize quickly, turning flat and dull. Store opened sherry in the fridge and use it within about a week, or choose a sturdier style like amontillado or oloroso.
- Pick your sherry style to shape the drink. Fino gives a crisp, bright, saline edge, while oloroso adds nutty, rounded richness. Choose fino for a lighter aperitif, or oloroso for a deeper, more velvety glass.
- Choose a smooth whisky. The 1927 recipe called for Scotch whisky, and a gentle blend lets the sherry’s character come through. I’d always reach for a smooth blended Scotch, because it supports the drink rather than overpowering it.
Twists
- Original Groseille Version — Swap the grenadine for groseille (red currant syrup). You get the classic recipe’s bright, tart fruit and vivid pink color.
- Lemon Twist Finish — Express a lemon peel over the glass. Its fresh citrus oils lift the aroma and sharpen the first sip.
- Raspberry Artist’s Special — Use raspberry syrup instead of grenadine. It adds a juicy berry note and a softer, fruitier finish.
Food Pairings
- Manchego with Marcona almonds — Nutty Spanish cheese and almonds echo the sherry’s savory depth, while lemon keeps each bite fresh.
- Chicken liver pâté on toast — Its rich, earthy creaminess meets bright acidity and red fruit that cut through the richness.
- Fig and goat cheese crostini — Sweet figs mirror the drink’s fruit, and tangy goat cheese pairs beautifully with sherry’s dry edge.
