M-45 Cocktail | Easy 3-Ingredient Vodka & Sloe Gin Recipe

M-45 cocktail with an orange-to-red gradient in a margarita-style glass, garnished with an apple fan and red cherries on a bar mat

The M-45 cocktail is, true to its name, a drink written in the stars: “M45” is the catalog number of the Pleiades, the cluster Japan calls Subaru, and legendary bartender Kazuo Uyeda is credited with capturing it in a glass. Clean vodka sets a crisp, clear sky, a measure of sloe gin adds sweet-tart berry fruit and a glowing ruby hue, and fresh lime sharpens it all into a bright, balanced finish.

Shake one hard tonight and let a little galaxy shine in your glass.

M-45 | Origin, How to Enjoy & Video

Origin

The Pleiades star cluster, also called M45 or Subaru, glowing with bright blue stars and soft nebula against the night sky

The M-45 takes its name from the Pleiades star cluster, listed as object 45 by French astronomer Charles Messier in his 18th-century catalog. In Japan, the cluster has long been called Subaru, a word meaning “to gather together,” and it even inspired the logo of the Subaru car brand.

The cocktail is credited to Kazuo Uyeda, one of Japan’s most celebrated bartenders, who is said to have created it in 1985. Its glowing ruby hue, born from sloe gin, shines in a dim bar much like a cluster of stars.

Vodka’s clean base lets the sloe gin’s tart fruit and the lime’s bright acidity come forward, creating a drink that feels as romantic as its name.

Features & Taste

The M-45 is a medium-dry vodka cocktail that balances sweet-tart fruit with fresh acidity. Sloe gin brings berry-like fruitiness, while lime keeps it light and lively.

Vodka’s clean, neutral base lets each flavor shine, giving the drink both easy charm and depth. Neither too sweet nor too sour, it makes a lovely aperitif. I like to finish it with a twist of lime peel, because the aroma lifts the berry notes beautifully.

Points, Twists & Food Pairings

Tips for Making It

  1. Use true sloe gin. A common mistake is reaching for regular dry gin because of the name. Dry gin has no fruit or sweetness, so the drink loses its ruby color and berry flavor. Look for “sloe gin” on the label, a liqueur made by steeping sloe berries in gin.
  2. Shake hard and cold. At about 27% ABV, this drink is spirit-forward, so a vigorous shake softens the alcohol. In the spirit of Kazuo Uyeda’s famous hard shake, I always shake it firmly until the shaker is ice-cold.
  3. Squeeze the lime fresh. Fresh lime gives a clean, bright acidity that lifts the sloe’s fruit. If it tastes too tart, add a touch of simple syrup to find your perfect balance.

Twists

  1. Berry-Forward M-45 — Increase the sloe gin to 1/2 oz (15ml). The drink turns a deeper ruby and the berry notes come forward.
  2. M-45 Highball — Build it over ice in a tall glass and top with chilled soda. It becomes a lighter, sparkling long drink for warm evenings.
  3. Lemon M-45 — Swap the lime juice for lemon. Its softer acidity gives a rounder, gentler finish.

Food Pairings

  1. Goat cheese with berry jam — The cheese’s creamy tang meets the sloe gin’s berry fruit, while lime keeps each bite fresh.
  2. Smoked duck breast — Rich, smoky meat pairs naturally with fruity sloe, much like a classic fruit sauce for duck.
  3. Dried cranberries & nuts — The cranberries echo the drink’s sweet-tart fruit, and the nuts add a gentle, toasty contrast.
